I Am Disturbed.

November 12th, 2009 by Riley

And not just in the usual way.

I am doing some research for an article and I happened upon some things that just… well, I can’t really explain the level of my what-the-fuckness at the moment.

You see, when I took the article regarding decorating ideas for bookshelves, I assumed this meant, you know, like sprucing a humdrum bookcase up. Like doing a paper collage or stenciling on a boring exterior to make it look custom cool. But when I started researching, I began to uncover all of this creepy evidence that came together to reveal an appalling trend.

Evidence:

from a blog: “Definitely use your books…that is if you have any. If you don’t, you can always buy some at your local flea market.”

from a message board: the original issue: “I have some bookshelves… They are currently bare. I do have a lot of books, but not exactly the kind that I would want on display.”

the response: “if you want books that look bookshelf worthy go to a thrift store and get some. The older hardcover/leather ones with the gold lettering for example. They always have plenty of those. I get them for 50 cents to 1.00… I always find really interesting pieces at thrift or consignment stores.”

There are so many things wrong with this, I won’t begin to dissect it. But -

“Definitely use your books…that is if you have any.”

Why exactly did you buy a bookcase?

And -

“bookshelf worthy”

How foolish I feel for believing that the books I actually read deserve a spot in my bookcase.

Now I know.

    I… but… huh… what?!

    People are so confusing sometimes.

Books as fashion accessory is nothing new, really, but the idea of buying books for no purpose other than decor is a bit disturbing.

Now, I actually really do like the “Rainbow of Books” notion, whereby books are arranged on the shelves by color. Seems entirely non-user-friendly when you actually want to FIND a particular book, but it does look cool. :)

I get that, I am disturbed too. I stubbornly display all my books in my shelves, new ones, used ones, paperback mysteries and hardcover textbooks. So there. I’ve actually heard of people who wouldn’t put books into their living room because they think it doesn’t look orderly. Personally, I think a home without books is not one I could live in. Alright, ending my rant for the day now… ;)
