TITLE: Temporary Girlfriend (13/20)
PAIRING: Lindsay/Cindy
DISCLAIMER: Women’s Murder Club does not belong to me. The characters do not belong to me. They are the property of James Patterson, 20th Century Fox Television and ABC. I have no problems with that as long as I can borrow them for short bursts and use them in pursuit of my own enjoyment. I am not trying to infringe. Though, I don’t know why anyone has a problem with fan fic. After all, it really is a compliment. If anyone wants to write fan fiction about my book, feel free.
(Lindsay’s POV)
So, the festivities were to open with a bang, or rather a smack… as in of lips; not as in “smack that bitch up”.
Literally, it was as in a sixty second kiss-in.
Lindsay had to hand it to the organizers, they were setting the stage for a very dramatic visual, thousands of boys kissing boys and girls kissing girls with the backdrop of the sun setting over the Pacific.
Of course, it also meant a huge crowd of people in a completely unfortified location in falling darkness. Yes, it was a cynical cop-like outlook, but she’d allowed herself the one moment of romantic whimsy. Now she just had to do her job as best as she could given the circumstances.
“Wow. How many people do you think are here?” Cindy asked looking out over the crowd.
“Too damn many,” Lindsay responded before she could halt the negative remark.
Cindy just looked over at her, smiled, and shook her head lightly.
Fantastic Lindsay, way to prove yet again just how much fun you are to be around.
In an effort to make up for it, she took a survey of the group, engaging all of her crowd estimation skills.
“Twenty thousand maybe.”
“Really?”
She nodded and leaned her elbows onto the railing they’d ended up behind.
“So all of these people are going to kiss at the same time?” she asked Cindy.
“At the same time,” Cindy nodded. “For one whole minute. I trust that means they’ll go beyond little lip pecks. Sexy huh?”
Lindsay’s first thought was actually that it would be a fine opportunity for some potential perpetrator to catch everyone with their eyes closed, but she wisely managed to not voice that opinion.
“And right now you’re thinking, what a prime opportunity for a terrible crime,” Cindy stated for her.
Damn, she would have gotten away with it too… if it hadn’t been for that meddling kid.
“Well it is,” Lindsay confirmed.
“Linds, what if it is? If something is going to happen, it’s going to happen. With all of these people, what’s the chance that you could actually stop it?” Cindy glanced over, seemingly to assess her reaction. “Not what you wanted to hear was it?”
“Not quite.”
But, Lindsay had to admit, it was kind of true. There were too many people here, this event was way too big to prevent something from happening unless they were warned well in advance. They could only do what they could do.
The sun was casting a, rather fitting, vibrant red tint over the eager throng of people, and someone on the stage started a countdown.
“Almost time for the kissing,” Cindy smiled, watching the people around her expectantly.
They weren’t in the designated kissing enclosure, but they had ended up intermingled with the spillover crowd, and there were plenty of people turning to face each other around them, gearing up for the big kiss.
A bell rang and, one second later, she and Cindy were the only people in the vicinity who weren’t engaged in a semi-passionate liplock. Cindy was clearly into the widespread public displays of affection. Lindsay watched her watch the couples around them with a simultaneously contented and covetous look in her eyes.
The more conscious part of her subconscious told her it was the perfect cover, that they looked too obvious just standing there, but deeper in her subconscious, the part that remained the most hidden, Lindsay knew that it was just a perfect excuse.
Her fingers clasped onto Cindy’s wrist and pulled her closer, and, when Cindy looked over, her hand on Cindy’s cheek held her in place. The surprise in Cindy’s eyes was unmistakable, but Lindsay gladly ignored it, before her lips came into intimate contact with Cindy’s and she couldn’t keep her own eyes open.
She could have kept it simple. She could have just left it at a wholesome lip-to-lip press. This wasn’t her apartment, she wasn’t being challenged, and she wasn’t trying to prove a point. She didn’t have to slide her hand up into Cindy’s hair to pull her closer, or open her mouth to run her tongue along Cindy’s lips. She definitely didn’t have to take complete advantage when those lips parted for her.
But she wanted to.
Cindy breathed raggedly into the kiss and Lindsay’s heart pulsated in response. God, it was just as good as that night on her sofa, but, of course, she’d known it was going to be. That’s why she hadn’t tried to resist the urge when it came over her this time.
Since when did a minute go by so fast?, that was Lindsay’s first thought when she heard the bells clanging loudly, interrupting the charged current between them. She pulled away, and Cindy opened her eyes slowly. It was a damn good thing that they were in public. Back in their room, that look could have gotten Lindsay into serious, irreversible trouble. Even in this very public place she was having difficulty controlling her more animalistic impulses.
“Everyone’s still safe,” she exhaled, turning back toward the crowd in an effort to avoid Cindy’s gaze, a gaze which contained a question that Lindsay definitely wasn’t ready to answer.
“Disaster averted,” Cindy added, also turning to face front.
Whether Cindy intended it to sound like a cartoon superhero or not, Lindsay couldn’t help giggling at the response.
Then again, as much as she hated to admit to a symptom of such absolute girlishness, maybe she was just still slightly giddy.
