Days of Apathy

December 8th, 2007 by Riley

Do you ever perform your job tasks in such a half-assed fashion that you wonder if it’s possible to bring the entire company crashing down as a result? Have you ever been paid for a job for several weeks without actually ever figuring what you are doing? Do you ever wonder how companies are so oblivious to the fact that you are doing absolutely nothing, or absolutely nothing they are paying you to do, while utilizing their equipment and getting paid for it?

Then again, I sit amongst people who do nothing but what they are paid to do all day long. They take short lunches, work over-time and go to the bathroom on their breaks. They are scared for their jobs and their financial well-being. This makes them dutiful little worker ants.

I really wish sometimes that I could be that person; that I could have the ability to be okay just adding a little piece to some big company’s profit pyramid. But I can’t. I must be the ant that leaves the line, the one that is crashing the picnic while the others are all adding dirt to the hill. While this may not make me popular with my co-workers, at least I get to chow down on the watermelon and potato salad. Until I get squished with a boot that is.
